Licensed Veterinary Technician
Licensed Veterinary Technicians have
completed a two year program in veterinary technology and passed a
licensing exam or have worked full time as a veterinary assistant
for 5 years and then passed a licensing exam. Licensed
Veterinary Technicians perform diagnostic procedures (obtain and
perform tests on blood, urine, and fecal samples, obtain
radiographs, perform ecgs, etc.), anesthetize and monitor
anesthetized pets, perform dental cleanings, place IV catheters and
monitor fluid therapy, and monitor and treat hospitalized
patients. Licensed Veterinary Technicians also supervise and
train veterinary assistants, ensure that hospital safety and
housekeeping procedures are followed, and oversee maintenance of
medical equipment. They also assist with client education and
client services.
Veterinary Assistant
Veterinary Assistants are responsible for direct patient
care, checking in patients for exams and procedures, participating
in client services and client education, and maintaining a clean,
well organized, and well stocked hospital. Specific
responsibilities include educating clients on recommended wellness
care, obtaining initial patient histories and vital signs, giving
vaccinations, performing suture removals and nail trims,
instructing clients in post-surgical home care, monitoring
hospitalized patients, assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic
procedures, performing inventory of hospital supplies, and keeping
the hospital clean throughout the day. Veterinary Assistants
supervise the Kennel/Cleaning Assistants and are responsible for
ensuring that all cleaning and housekeeping tasks are completed on
a daily basis. Applicants must have excellent client service
skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, good
computer and math skills, experience with animal restraint and
basic animal care, ability to work long hours in a physically and
mentally challenging job, ability to complete tasks without direct
supervision, ability to handle multiple tasks at once, and ability
to remain calm and pleasant during times of stress.
Experience drawing blood, running in-house lab tests, giving
injections and other treatments, monitoring anesthetized patients,
sterilizing instruments, and performing other technical tasks is
preferred and may be required.
Client Services
Client Services staff are responsible for
ensuring that clients are greeted promptly and that their needs are
attended to in a timely, pleasant, thorough, and professional
manner. Duties include answering phones, scheduling
appointments, maintaining an accurate and well organized medical
records systems, relaying messages, entering charges, collecting
payment, reviewing estimates, and assisting in admitting patients
for exams and procedures. Client Services staff also help
educate clients regarding recommended wellness care for their
pets. Applicants must have excellent client services skills,
excellent written and verbal communication skills, good computer
and math skills, be able to handle multiple tasks at once, be able
to remain calm and pleasant during stressful times, and be able to
complete required tasks without direct supervision.
Experience in a veterinary hospital is always preferred and may be
required.
Janitorial/Housekeeping
This position is where many veterinary
assistants, technicians, and veterinarians start their
careers. The primary responsibility is cleaning and
maintaining a safe, pleasant, clean, and organized hospital
environment. Tasks include sterilizing surgical equipment,
doing laundry, sweeping and mopping, cleaning cages, and
re-stocking work areas. Kennel/cleaning assistants also
assist other members of the hospital team in caring for patients
and boarders.
